Pakistan wilt under Hafeez bowling ban

Dubai: Pakistan, who were just coming to terms with the loss of their ace spinner Saeed Ajmal, banned due to a suspect action, were dealt another huge blow when their top all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, who bowls off spin, was also suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after he failed a test on his action.

Following the analysis on his bowling action performed on November 24 by the ICC’s accredited team of Human Movement Specialists using the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough, it was found that Hafeez’s action exceeds the 15-degree limit for all deliveries.

Pakistan, who are gearing up to play a five-match one-day series against New Zealand, were stunned by the news. Moin Khan, the manager and chief selector of the team candidly admitted that it is a huge setback for Pakistan before the World Cup.

“Hafeez has a huge value both as a batsman and bowler. He is an impact player. It surely is a big setback for Pakistan, especially before the World Cup, that his bowling has been declared illegal. It will hamper our preparations, but I am also sure that just like our players performed in the absence of Saeed Ajmal, we will have spinners who will make use of this opportunity,” said Moin, trying hard to suppress his disappointment.

When asked whether there is panic in the team, having lost two experienced spinners, Moin, putting a brave face, said: “There is no panic. These kind of things happen. There are times when a player gets injured during the course of a match and you just have to cope with the situation. At least we are a bit lucky and we can prepare better towards this situation. Even the bowling options that we have in the team, they will be mentally prepared. Of course, there will be pressure, and you have to take responsibility and deliver. It’s part of the game.” More

Symptoms of Ebola Virus are Similar To Some Other

Ebola virus and its genus were both originally named for Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo, the country where it was first described, and was first suspected to be a new, strain, of the closely related Marburg virus. The virus was renamed,Ebola virus, in 2010 to avoid confusion. Ebola virus is the single member of the species Zaire Ebola virus, which is the type species for the genus Ebola virus, family Filoviridae, order Mononegavirales. Ebola virus disease, EVD, formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human to human transmission. The natural reservoir of Ebola virus is considered to be bats, particularly fruit bats, and it is primarily transmitted between humans and from animals to humans through body fluids. The virus spreads by direct contact with blood or other body fluids of an infected human or other animal. Infection with the virus may also occur by direct contact with a recently contaminated item or surface. Spread of the disease through the air between primates, including humans, have not been documented in either laboratory or natural conditions. The virus may be transmitted by semen or breast milk for several weeks to months after recovery. Fruit bats are believed to be the normal carrier in nature, able to spread the virus without being affected by it. Humans become infected by contact with the bats or with a living or dead animal that has been infected by bats. After human infection occurs, the disease may also spread between people. Simply Ebola is an illness of humans and other primates caused by Ebola virus. Signs and symptoms typically start between two days and three weeks after contracting the virus as a fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and headaches. Then, vomiting, diarrhea and rash usually follow, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. At this time, some people begin to bleeding both internally and externally. The disease has a high risk of death, killing between 25 percent and 90 percent of those infected with the virus, averaging out at 50 percent. This is usually due to low blood pressure from fluid loss, and typically follows six to sixteen days after symptoms appear. Necessary measure for people who care for those infected with Ebola should wear protective clothing including masks, gloves, gowns and goggles. The US Centers for Disease Control, CDC, recommends that the protective gear leaves no skin exposed. These measures are further recommended for those who may handle objects contaminated by an infected person's body fluids. In 2014, the CDC began recommending that medical personnel receive training on the proper suit up and removal of personal protective equipment, PPE, in addition, a designated person, appropriately trained in bio-safety, should be watching each step of these procedures to ensure they are done correctly. The infected person should be in barrier-isolation from other people. All equipment, medical waste, patient waste and surfaces that may have come in contact with body fluids need to be disinfected. During the 2014 outbreak, kits were put together to help families to treat Ebola disease in their homes, which include protective clothing as well as chlorine powder and other cleaning supplies. Supportive care rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids and treatment of specific symptoms, improves survival. There is still no proven treatment available for EVD. However, a range of potential treatments including blood products, immune therapies and drug therapies are currently being reviewed. Educate those people who provide care with these techniques and look after people who infected from Ebola virus.

The US Government Wants To Patent The Ebola Virus, Here’s Why That’s A Good Thing

U.S. government researchers are embroiled in a five-year fight with the Patent and Trademark office for a patent on the Ebola virus. Though the effort sounds ominous, it could accelerate the pace of research into an Ebola vaccine by preventing pharmaceutical companies from monopolizing the field.

Through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. government often seeks patents on viruses and their genetic material in an effort to research the diseases safely. If awarded a patent, the agency would make the material available for public use, which private companies aren’t as likely to do.

If a company patents it, they could limit access, said Robert Stoll, former U.S. Patent and Trademark commissioner, currently an attorney at Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP. The government, could donate it to the public.

And it’s happened before. The CDC holds a patent on the SARS virus from more than a decade ago.

The whole purpose of the patent is to prevent folks from controlling the technology,  it said at the time. This is being done to give the industry and other researchers reasonable access to the samples.

Years before the worst Ebola outbreak in history began sweeping across West Africa, the U.S. government was spending millions of dollars to support research on the virus, which, at the time, held no economic interest for big pharmaceutical companies. Federal researchers at the CDC submitted an application for a patent on Ebola five years ago with the broad intention of helping their own substantial research efforts and to ensure that it remained available to the public.

But patenting a virus isn’t simple. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office continues to deny the application. The case taps into an ongoing legal debate in American courts struggling to apply old rules to new science.

U.S. law forbids a patent on any living thing. But lawmakers probably never envisioned a time when scientists could modify microorganisms or sequence DNA, which has made things complicated. The legal issues are in a state of flux, and one of the things that got caught up in it with this patent, said biotechnology and patent lawyer Kevin Noonan.

The CDC has managed to isolate the Ebola virus and modify it so that it is safe to work with, and it argues that this is enough of a change to merit a patent. But the patent office feels it isn’t far enough from its natural state. More
